Our educators are chosen on the basis of a demonstrated ability to teach because we are committed to true academic enrichment in addition to improving test scores.
Our educators' teaching experiences range from acquiring doctorates in academic concentrations and master's degrees in education to teaching yoga classes and improvisational comedy classes. It is this commitment to teaching—in all of its diversified forms—that we look for in an instructor.
Most test prep groups boast of hiring only people who themselves have scored well on the tests they teach. The implication here is that those who post high scores on an exam, by definition, are capable of teaching. Whoever is making this assumption either has no experience working with teachers or needs a lesson on critical reasoning.
What makes a teacher great is not his or her ease or fluency in performing a task but the passion and innovation with which he or she explains it. In order to fulfill our educational mission—"Teaching Beyond The TestTM"—an instructor must be able to relate the content of the test to a variety of fields and make productive analogies. For example, an Academic Approach instructor might explain how a combination or permutation problem in math is like the variations on a play in basketball or football or how constructing an argument is like the choreography in a dance, an interplay of substance and style. What the good teacher does—and this has been true since Plato—is to provide productive analogies so that the material becomes personally meaningful to the student.
Therefore, we hire instructors who can place test content in a broad and meaningful context. Our educators love knowledge, and their passion for it is contagious. For us, knowledge and reasoning are aspects of our lives, not merely aspects of a test.

While working on a Ph.D. in English Language and Literature at Columbia University in the City of New York, Matthew Pietrafetta instructed hundreds of college and high school students in a variety of academic subjects and standardized tests. At Columbia, Matthew was selected as a Writing Fellow in the English Composition Department to instruct Columbia undergraduates in a number of composition courses. His work with students concentrated on logic, reasoning, and argumentation. At the same time, Matthew prepared hundreds of New York City high school students in standardized tests and numerous academic subjects. His teaching experience includes tutoring standardized tests such as the SAT, the SAT Subject Tests, the ACT, the SSAT, the ISEE, the LSAT, the GMAT, the GRE, and the MCAT. Through his work with high school and college students, Matthew found that the logic skills required for successful test taking were also necessary rudiments for success with the more complicated tasks of reasoning, analysis, and argument on the college level. The Academic Approach is Matthew's attempt to bridge these two levels of education by developing a standardized testing curriculum that imparts both sound academic knowledge and the salient reasoning skills necessary for optimal test performance and sophisticated critical thinking in the classroom.
